Volunteers will help paint and clean/beautify the store and office space. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Volunteers who paint should have some painting skill and not be uneasy if they have to be on scaffolding (for higher painting spots.) Volunteer will match up pieces of disassembled beds, clean them, assemble the bed for testing, test, disassemble for pick up/transport to Erie community members. This is an ongoing serving opportunity through Winter 2025. Volunteers should be over the age of 18 and able to lift heavy materials (50lbs) and problem solve. Volunteers will support our community animal shelter with upkeep, activities for animals, etc. Shelter cleaning, making enrichment toys for animals, assisting with activity classes, reading to and/or praying over animals. Orientation will be required, and youth under age 18 may not handle animals without adult attendance and training. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Help prevent community malnourishment by serving meals to families at the community shelters of Kiwanis Village. Assist to serve a breakfast, lunch or dinner to families at Kiwanis Village. Food is provided by Community Shelter Services. Serve times are approximately one hour. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Each shift will only be 4 hours long, but times vary. Volunteers will help support the community park environment by helping to plant trees. A broad range of skill sets needed, some of which can be done from home. Join the water squad to care for newly planted trees. Volunteers over age 18 can also assist with Open Market vendor, coordination, setting up and tearing down for market, photography, sell LEAF merchandise & more. This is a project for YOUTH. Attendance is not required, this is a work from home project. Volunteers will write notes or letters to senior residents and mail them to the activity coordinator at the senior facility. Provide companionship to a senior resident who may not have many family or friends to communicate with via written correspondence. Volunteers only under 18 years of age. Volunteers will help to maintaining a safe and clean building where the USCRI staff can work and serve newly-arrived refugees + childcare center . Volunteer will help to deep clean the building--mopping, sweeping, wiping down surfaces, windows, etc. + washing toys and all surfaces in on-site childcare center and playground, we could also use periodic outdoor clean up, raking, trimming, weeding, mowing (to off-set loss of personnel with funding cuts.) This is a repeated, on-going serving opportunity (4 hour shift) for any age (under 18 must serve with a parent/adult). Volunteers will assist in the classroom and/or help students utilize the driving simulator. We utilize a lot of visual and hands on learning techniques. We will not be practicing driving in a car. Driving Class for refugees who are illiterate in their own language and therefore unable to study the PA Manual for the permit test. In all of our classes, we share a bible verse and pray to plant seeds. Our goal is to make safe drivers and understanding the rules of the road is the first step. Driving classes will begin again in the Fall in 2025. All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Volunteers will help the Erie City Mission daily meal service by organizing donations, preparing food, serving meals, engaging with guests and supporting the daily public and internal meal service of breakfast and lunch for persons experiencing homelessness or living in poverty. Breakfast shifts begin at 6:30 a.m. Lunch shifts are from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Volunteers must be 16 or older and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers will help teach ESL classes, be drivers and helpers to prepare and teach English and/or phonics. Volunteers will help to prepare and share the bible verse(training/guidance will be provided). There are usually small children in the room, so bringing young helpers to play and watch the kids is encouraged. Several of the women need a ride to and from class, so those who wish to drive women and children is helpful (but not required) as well. English classes for Afghan women will take place at McKinley Elementary. Classes will be held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons(2-4pm) from July 1 through mid August (Summer commitment is 2 hours per week for 6 weeks). We are teaching them English and sharing bible verses and stories to plant seeds and be a witness to who Jesus truly is. Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
